Great Finds Under $100: More Classic Than Pirate

One shouldn’t mix up getting a great deal with simply getting something cheaply. Lots of things go on sale. Some things are never expensive. Such things, however, aren’t always a great value. I could, for example, find a puffy, unflattering, white shirt that made me look more like a pirate queen than a chic urbanite on sale for 75% off, but that doesn’t mean that it buying it would be a good idea.

The 3 R’s of Gifting Green

By now, we all realize that we have to reduce, reuse, and recycle if we want to keep our precious planet in the condition we inherited it. At our house, we try to embody the basics of a green lifestyle, and find that most of it is pretty easy. We take our lunches to work in reusable containers instead of using plastic bags and wraps that we’d have to throw out in one use. We use cloth napkins, and bring grocery bags to the store. Indeed, a lot of what we do to be green ends up saving us money, which makes our gift-giving budget a little bigger. Even if our budget is flexible, we still try to be careful where we spend our money in that we try to make eco-conscious purchases.

When you buy new items made from recycled materials, you encourage future recycling by sustaining the industry. Also, since quite a bit of innovation goes into using recycled materials in new items, they often make for very unique creations. When my husband and I were talking about what to get his father for his birthday, I thought of these Shea Stadium Cufflinks:

He’s a Queens resident, and, as such, a Mets fan (like the hubby himself). The Mets recently moved to a new stadium, so an item from Shea is all the more significant. Marriage is hard work, but it is also so much bigger and greater than a single day of celebration.

This is why couples celebrate their wedding day each year. They don’t celebrate the day they wore fancy clothes and hung out with 300 of their nearest and dearest. Rather, an anniversary is a special occasion because it is a chance to celebrate another year of love, another year of sharing a life together, another year of working to be there for one another. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

This post is a short one. I hope that everyone is enjoying the end of the long-weekend today. For those of us taking it easy and staying indoors on this day off, there’s been a lot of coverage on television and radio about tomorrow’s inauguration. That said, there have also been some reminders as to why we have today off in the first place. As we look forward to where we’re going as a nation, let’s not forget where we’ve come from and all those who have been so important along the way:

Comfort Food for Cold Weather

Winter has definitely set in. Much of the country is in the midst of a deep freeze, and my neighborhood is no exception. I tend to be a bit of a homebody in general, but I especially prefer to stay in when the mercury dips. I find no better time than during a cold spell to make some of my favorite comfort foods. I’m quite the foodie, and my husband is as well, so that equals a household of cooks and eaters. Indeed, this set of Chef Hat & Spoon Cufflinks represent us well:

Yesterday, we made gallons of bean soup. It is a great way to warm up after facing the elements outside. We’ve frozen much of it so as to have easy suppers in the weeks to come. As the winter wears on, we’ll make other comforting dishes like roasts and casseroles; it’s one of the best parts of the season.

Well, in just a few short days, President-Elect Obama will be sworn in as our 44th president. President Bush has already given his farewell speech, and preparations are being made throughout Washington, D.C. to prepare for the inauguration. Things are sure to be very exciting for the next week. I actually know a few people who are going to the inauguration, as well as some who are going to Washington just to be near this historic event.

While I won’t be able to be there in person, I will be keeping up with all the events on TV, radio, and the predictable texts from friends who will be in attendance. It won’t be the same as being there, but January 20th is going to be a big deal for me all the same, and I’m sure that I’ll remember it in the years to come.
