Go Green for St. Paddy’s Day

Although St. Patrick’s Day is an Irish feast day celebration, it’s celebrated around the globe with beer, kisses, and lots of green!

A Little History

According the the Encyclopaedia Britannica: St. Patrick was born in Roman Britain in the late 4th century. After  he was kidnapped at the age of 16 and taken to Ireland as a slave, he escaped and later returned to convert the Irish to Christianity. By the time of his death on March 17, 461, he had established monasteries, churches, and schools. Eventually, many legends grew up around him, including one that he drove the snakes out of Ireland and another that he used the shamrock to explain the Trinity. Celebrate Prohibition Repeal Day with Some Liquid Refreshment

December 5th marks the repeal of Prohibition in the United States.  At the turn of the 20th century, alcohol was seen by many, especially women and labor unions, as a source of evil.  Women often felt that the drink was a destroyer of the family and marriages, and labor unions needed its workers sober to work long, grueling hours at often dangerous jobs.  Therefore, in 1917, the Volstead Act (the 18th Amendment), also known as Prohibition, was passed. Mardi Gras Cufflinks for Fat Tuesday

Mardi Gras History

Mardi Gras, French for Fat Tuesday, is part of the carnival celebrations that begin after Three Kings Day and continue until Tuesday before Ash Wednesday, which marks the beginning of the Lent Season. Since Lent is a time of foregoing something of value, often food or another enjoyable activity, Fat Tuesday is the last big hurrah before the fast begins.

To mark the day before the beginning of Lent, Mardi Gras is a time of indulgence. Revelers eat rich food, attend opulent balls, and party until the early morning hours. And although most people think of Mardi Gras as a single day, it’s actually a celebration that takes place over several days or weeks (depending on where you’re celebrating the holiday).

Parading and Partying

The Mardi Gras parade is probably the best known aspect of the holiday. It features giant, colorful floats, beautiful costumes, and lots and lots of beads! The first Mardi Gras parade held in New Orleans took place in 1837. The tradition in New Orleans expanded to the point that it became synonymous with the city, and isembraced by residents of New Orleans regardless of their ethnic or religious background.

On Mardi Gras Day, the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday, the last parades of the season wrap up and the celebrations come to a close with the Meeting of the Courts (known as the Rex Ball). Other local Krewes host their own balls and many locals spend the evening partying in the streets.

Dress It Up for a Mardi Gras Ball

Although New Orleans is the city most often associated with this fun season, Mardi Gras is celebrated in many other cities. However, if you’re attending one of the Mardi Gras balls, you need to look your best because most of the best ones are black-tie events. And even if you’re not, it’s fun to show you party spirit at work. We’ve got some ideas for you that include cufflinks with the traditional Mardi Gras colors of green, purple, and gold:

Celebrating the New Year with New Cufflinks

The new year brings an opportunity for new beginnings and new inspiration.  For many of us, it’s a time to review the passing year, evaluate our goals, and organize our calendars.  This time of year is also a good time to take stock of your closet, looking for any gaps, and filling them in.

Review Your Wardrobe

Looking, at your closet, evaluate which items you wear the most. Consider both the pieces you wear to work, and the pieces that you wear to relax.  Remove items that are out-of-style, that don’t fit, or that are too shabby to pass off as chic.  These pieces can be donated if they’re still wearable and in good condition, recycled into other things (cleaning rags, etc.) to give them new life, or tossed.

Cleaning out the old is a great way to give your current favorites room to breathe, as well as making it easier to find things in the morning when you’re still half asleep and digging through the closet for something presentable.

Evaluate Your Cufflink Collection

Once you have a good idea of what’s in your closet, take stock of the different accessories that you currently have to see if there are any gaps.  Consider belts, money clips, tie clips, and of course, cuff links.  While many men are perfectly happy wearing the same pair of cufflinks day-after-day, you are not that man.  You know that a well-dressed man has cufflinks that fit into the different occasions that he may find himself in.

So, examining your jewelry and accessories, do you have cufflinks that work well with and accentuate your style for each outfit you own and for the occasions that you frequently find yourself in?  If not, now is the perfect time to spruce things up.  (Note, this is also the perfect time to get any broken pieces repaired, or to replace them with something new.)  Check out our collection of New Year’s inspired cuff links here.

Now that you have evaluated the cufflinks, tie clips, etc. that you own, it’s time to consider the care and keeping of these items.  You can certainly toss them into a draw, but then you run the risk of finding them damaged when you need them.  Similarly you could toss them into a shoebox.  Or you could keep in the box they came in.  Of course, then you’ve have to open each box to decide it the pair is the one you want.

An easier solution is to invest in a quality cufflinks box that will showcase your cufflinks, and (depending on your choice of box) allow you to safely contain all your other accessories.  The ideal box will let you see all your cufflinks at a glance, making it easy and fast to get ready.  We have lots for you to choose from here.

Go Be Awesome!

That’s it!  You’re ready to head out into whatever life throws at you, knowing that you’re stylishly dressed and ready to impress.  If you discover holes in your wardrobe, and you need help deciding on a new pair of cufflinks, or a classy tie clip, or a beautifully crafted cufflink box, our wonderful holiday elves (a.k.a. support team) would love to talk to you!  Give us a call and we will help you make the perfect choice.
