Skultuna – A Unique Company with Rich History

Skultuna caters to both royalty and the everyday man.  With fine metal products that are sure to become family heirlooms, their cufflinks are beautiful and functional.  You are sure to treasure these unique pieces of jewelry.  Below you’ll find some history about the brand, or you can explore their collection here.

A Little History

Skultuna was founded by King Karl IX of Sweden in 1607 as a brass factory.  The King had long been desiring to start a Swedish brass industry in order to reduce dependence on brass imports and end Sweden’s indebtedness to the Hanseatic League.  After scouring the country for a location that would be suitable, the town of Skultuna was chosen because of its proximity to running water that would help to power the foundry.  Since the town also provided charcoal and was close the the copper mine, it was the ideal location.

The first master brass crafters were recruited from nearby countries, Germany and the Netherlands.  They also brought the ability to build beautiful and elaborate chandeliers, some of which still hang in churches dating back to 1617!

Between the 15th and 16th centuries, the various designers at Skultuna became world renown for their creations. They also developed processes and work methods that became standardized.  Several of their designers were granted prestigious awards for their craftsmanship and designs, some of which are still displayed in the museum in Skultuna.

In the later 1900s, other well known designers contributed their skills to the Skultuna line with designs that are uniquely Scandinavian: strict and contemporary in style.

Skultuna Today

The factory at Skultuna has faced many challenges, including floating away in a flood, and burning down completely three different times.  Each time it was rebuilt and remodeled to improve upon the original structure.  Now, for over 400 years, Skultuna has produced products of the finest craftsmanship, both for everyday use and for special occasions. They also continue to be purveyors to the Royal Court of Sweden.
