Engraving vs. Monograms: What’s the Difference?

Engraving vs. Monograms: What’s the Difference?

Nothing is more special than having something custom made just for you – especially when it includes having your initials or a special message engraved on a piece of jewelry. When buying a luxury piece of jewelry, you will often see an option for adding a monogram or engraving, but what are these processes and how are they different? Please enjoy our guide on the personalization process of monograms and engravings.

First, what is the difference between monograms and engraving? Monograms are a set of letters, typically initials, with the largest letter being the first letter from the last name. They can be printed or engraved in your jewelry pieces.

Engraving is the process of carving a design, like a monogram, into an object. The most common materials that are engraved are metals, glass, or wood.

Engraving a pair of cufflinks or money clip is a great way to take your gift up to the next level. It shows an exceptional level of care and makes a gift the wearer will always treasure. Here at Cufflinks Depot, we have hundreds of items that are engravable. From cufflinks to lapel pins and tie clips, to humidors, collar stays, and more. You are sure to find the perfect gift and customize it with a beautiful engraving.

We offer two main styles of engraving. The monogram style where the last name’s initial letter will be in the middle and larger than the other two letters. The text style where all letters are the same size and read in the usual fashion. We also have items that allow for short words, and logos to be engraved.
